Born in Mumbai, India, Dr. Barai migrated to the USA in 1974. Winner of many gold medals in medicine, Dr. Barai obtained MD in Medicine (University. of Illinois), MD in Medical Oncology (Northwestern University Medical School), and MD in Hematology (Rush University Medical School). He is currently the Medical Director of the Cancer Institute, Methodist Hospitals, and a member and former president of the Medical Licensing Board of the State of Indiana. He has been the president of the medical staff, chairman of the medical executive committee, and serves on the board of directors of the Methodist Hospitals. He also serves on the advisory board of the Indiana University School of Business.nHe has received numerous awards in the last 35 years for his community services. He is a trustee and former president of Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), a founding member and former chairman of the board of trustees of the Manav Seva Mandir, a trustee of the Hindu Temple of Greater Chicago, a trustee of the Indian American Cultural Center-Northwest Indiana and many Indian American organizations. In 1913, Dr. Barai was honored with the ?Ellis Island Medal of Honor,? a highly prestigious civilian honor in the USA. In 2015, he was honored by India Tribune with “Man of the Year Award”. Recently Dr. Barai was honored with Padmashree Award by President of India Pranab Mukherjee.nHe has organized meetings to raise resources when natural disasters have struck. They include Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, earthquake in Gujarat, earthquake in Haiti, etc.nHe has donated large sums to build sanitation facilities in India for people who are poor, homeless and living in ghettos. He worked with Ekal Vidyalaya, the largest NGO in India to provide basic education and healthcare to tribal children in remote villages. Dr. Barai is very active in promoting India-US relations. He was also one of the pioneers in getting the Indo-US nuclear deal signed. nDr. Bharat Barai has also created history by organizing a rock star community reception to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Madison Square Garden in New York on September 28. Over 20,000 Indian Americans witnessed this massive reception. Never happened before in the history of the USA, that over 30 political leaders, including US House of Representatives, US Senators, State Representatives and New York State Governor were eagerly waited on the stage to greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
